Windows Update for Windows 7 with SMS 2003

It appears that Windows Update is getting patches from the Internet even though we have SMS 2003. For XP, I had to set group policy - configure Automatic Updates to enabled to have SMS 2003 work. However, for Windows 7 and SCCM, this has to be disabled. Does anyone know how to turn off Windows Updates and still have SMS 2003 able to send down updates?

  1. If I understand that question you want SMS 2003 to send down the updates, you don't want the machines doing it themselves. Well it must be in an enabled state so you can have it set to download but not install.

  2. Consider the following scenario:
Both Automatic Updates and Microsoft System Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) are configured to update a client computer.
System Management Server 2003 ITMU starts to deploy an update to a client computer.
Automatic Updates starts Windows Update to download an update.
In this scenario, the SMS 2003 ITMU update may be unsuccessful.

This problem occurs because both Automatic Updates and ITMU use the CopyToCache function to copy an update to the internal Windows Update download cache.

To work around this problem, set Automatic Updates on the client computer to Notify but do not download or install. The SMS ITMU tool requires Automatic Updates to run. If you disable Automatic Updates, you would prevent the ITMU tool from functioning. By setting the Automatic Updates to Notify but do not download or install, you keep the service running while also preventing the problem that is described in this article
